The Power of Desire

1 min read

“Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes.” Proverbs 27:20 NIV

Desire is a powerful thing. Two things I know about desire all too well: we all have it and it’s never satisfied. I do not need a book to tell me this. I’ve seen it and more importantly I experience it in my life.

Late 2018 I finally got the car of my dreams. Towards the end of the warranty I couldn’t in good conscience keep the liability. Last month I traded in for a much modern, 0 liability, and friendlier to my pocket vehicle. Do you think “desire” is satisfied? I bet you know the answer. I’m already plotting and scheming my move for February 2025 when I finish my agreement with this car!!!

Now, there can be humor in this but the problem is that “desire” keeps me away from today and anchors me in tomorrow land. This puts me squarely in worry/anxiety mode, and it goes downhill from there.

I picked cars, but a similar argument could be made about relationships, , booze, money, chasing status, going after younger/hotter mates, stock market, politics, news, social media, etc. You get the point.

Let’s keep desire in check today.
